Some power moves are literal leaps of faith, literally, and Katherine Horrigan knows this well. The former professional dancer, whose impressive career spanned New York City-based companies like Ailey II, Elisa Monte Dance, Jessica Lang Dance, and Francesca Harper Project, among others, has transformed her passion for movement into a thriving dance institution.
Katherine founded the Dance Academy of Virginia during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in just four short years, she’s grown the organization from two studio rooms to full locations in McLean and Del Ray. Most recently, the academy purchased its own building and is celebrating its fifth anniversary with performances this month.
As a founder, CEO, and mother, Katherine shares how she integrates her love for dance with leadership and entrepreneurship—and how her academy is shaping the next generation of confident, empowered dancers.
Launching a Dance School in the Middle of a Pandemic
Launching a business during COVID might sound impossible, but for Katherine, it was a personal mission.
“The decision was born out of a desire to support my community and take care of my family. When the dance studio I had directed closed due to the pandemic, our entire dance community—students, parents, and teachers—suddenly found ourselves without a home.”

Encouraged by her support system and driven by entrepreneurial spirit, Katherine pulled together a trusted team and secured space just one month before fall season classes began. She created not just a school, but a sanctuary—a place for dancers to express themselves, grow, and connect during a time of uncertainty.
A Mission-Driven Growth Strategy
Katherine attributes the academy’s growth to a clear mission: using dance as a platform for life skills, leadership, and confidence.
“Every decision—from training dancers with authenticity and excellence to empowering individuals through programming—is aligned with our belief that the stage is a rehearsal for life.”
As her role evolved from teacher to CEO, Katherine now focuses on vision, strategic planning, financial health, and leadership development. She is also a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization, helping her grow as a founder with clarity and intention.
Bringing The Nutcracker to the Main Stage
One major milestone ahead? The Nutcracker at Capital One Hall.
“It’s a tremendous honor. Performing in a professional 1,600-seat theater is a milestone for our school and dancers. It allows us to bring in acclaimed guest artists, engage a broader audience, and create a high-impact cultural experience.”
More than just a show, the performance will celebrate the work of students, parents, and educators who’ve built the academy together.
Investing in the Community
The decision to expand to Del Ray was a strategic and heartfelt one. With growing interest in high-quality dance and wellness programming for both children and adults, the new space provides a hub for connection and creativity.
“It allows us to grow our school while serving as a hub for other wellness and creative professionals.”
Balance is a Myth—Aim for Integration
As a single mom and business owner, Katherine doesn’t aim for balance—she aims for integration.
“I’ve learned to be flexible, creative, and honest about my limits.”
Whether it’s answering emails during her daughter’s nap or fitting in movement during teaching breaks, she’s found ways to blend personal and professional life with grace and strength.
