Youth Ensemble: A Performance Pathway for Dancers Who Love to Dance

At Dance Academy of Virginia (DAV), our goal is simple: to grow with your dancer - from their very first class as a little dancer all the way through adulthood. We believe every dancer’s journey looks different, and we strive to offer programs that support varying interests, schedules, and levels of commitment.

For dancers who truly love to dance and are looking for more performance opportunities, DAV offers two distinct pathways beyond our Youth Dancer programs: Youth Ensemble and our Academy Program. While both provide enriching experiences, they are designed for different types of dancers and families.

Understanding Youth Ensemble vs. Academy

The easiest way to think about it is this:

Youth Ensemble offers competition-style classes and performances with a meaningful but manageable commitment. Dancers audition for the program, but families can choose Ensemble without committing to a pre-professional track. Ensemble dancers train together, perform together, and experience the excitement of competitions similar to Showstopper, while still maintaining flexibility.

Academy, on the other hand, is a pre-professional program designed for dancers who are ready for a higher level of intensity and long-term commitment. Academy students follow a comprehensive, year-round training schedule and are placed by teacher recommendation and invited audition only.

Both programs emphasize growth, artistry, and community - but the time commitment, expectations, and long-term goals are different.

What Is Youth Ensemble?

Youth Ensemble is an audition-only performance program open to rising 2nd through 12th grade dancers at DAV’s McLean and Del Ray locations. It is ideal for dancers who are committed, motivated, and excited by the opportunity to perform more frequently while continuing to build strong technique.

“Youth Ensemble is about giving dancers the chance to shine on stage while being part of a supportive and uplifting team. We focus on strong technique, teamwork, and building confident performers who truly love what they do.”

Ensemble dancers train in both their regular youth classes and additional ensemble-specific classes during the summer and school year. The program is structured, supportive, and team-centered, helping dancers grow not only as performers but also as collaborators and leaders.

Youth Ensemble is divided into three levels based on age and skill:

Mini Ensemble (rising 2nd–5th grade)

Junior Ensemble (rising 6th–12th grade)

Senior Ensemble (rising 6th–12th grade)

Placement for Junior and Senior Ensemble is based on technical ability rather than age, ensuring dancers train with peers at a similar level.

Training & Time Commitment

Ensemble dancers participate in weekly classes during both the summer and school year, with hours increasing by level:

Mini Ensemble: 2 summer hours, 3 school-year hours

Junior Ensemble: 3 summer hours, 4 school-year hours

Senior Ensemble: 4 summer hours, 5 school-year hours

All Ensemble dancers also attend an August Ensemble Intensive to begin the year with focused technique work and choreography.

Performance Opportunities

One of the most exciting parts of Youth Ensemble is the opportunity to perform.

Mini Ensemble dancers participate in one competition, a community event such as the WinterFest Parade or Del Ray Tree Lighting, and the Spring Recital.

Junior Ensemble dancers attend two competitions, the same community event, and the Spring Recital.

Senior Ensemble dancers attend three competitions (with two dances per competition), in addition to the community performance and Spring Recital.

These experiences help dancers build confidence, professionalism, and a strong stage presence.

Why Families Choose Youth Ensemble

Families often choose Youth Ensemble because it offers:

A strong sense of teamwork and lasting friendships

Increased confidence through performance experience

Structured training without a full pre-professional commitment

Opportunities for artistic expression and growth

Youth Ensemble is a wonderful option for dancers who love to perform and want more than recreational classes, while still maintaining balance with school and other activities.

Auditions & Next Steps

Auditions for the 2026–2027 Youth Ensemble season will take place on May 9 at DAV McLean. Video auditions will be accepted for dancers who are unable to attend in person.

All dancers interested in auditioning - whether attending in person or submitting a video - must RSVP in advance using the appropriate link below:

Dancers who RSVP “ NO” will receive a choreography video in mid-April. They will need to learn the choreography, film themselves performing it, and submit the video to

info@danceacademyva.com by May 10 to be considered for the program.

Our Academy & Ensemble Information Session has already taken place, and families can review the slides from that meeting using the link provided here. The presentation covers program expectations, training pathways, time commitments, and performance opportunities.

We can’t wait to welcome the next group of Youth Ensemble dancers and continue supporting each dancer’s unique journey at DAV.
