A Holiday Tradition for Families in Northern Virginia

For generations, The Nutcracker has been one of the most beloved ways for families to celebrate the holiday season.

The story follows Clara on an extraordinary Christmas Eve adventure after her cherished Nutcracker comes to life. Audiences journey with her into a magical world filled with memorable characters, beautiful costumes, Tchaikovsky’s iconic score and some of classical ballet’s most recognizable scenes.

Dance Academy of Virginia’s full-length production brings that story to life with DAV dancers taking the stage at Capital One Hall.

Whether your children already love ballet or this will be their first Nutcracker performance, the production offers a wonderful introduction to live dance and an opportunity to create a holiday tradition your family can return to year after year.

More Than a Performance: The Mission Behind DAV’s Nutcracker

Behind the curtain of DAV’s Nutcracker is an important mission.

Dance Academy VA Productions is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding the benefits of dance education throughout the community through dance productions, scholarships and outreach initiatives.

The organization believes that dance education helps children develop skills that extend far beyond the studio, including discipline, perseverance, confidence, friendship, self-improvement and joy.

Its programs include:

  • Take the Stage, a performance initiative that gives young dancers opportunities to participate in dance productions while developing confidence, courage, commitment, teamwork, work ethic and stage experience.

  • The Scholarship Fund, which provides need-based tuition assistance to help make quality dance education accessible to more children.

  • Community Outreach, including after-school and in-school dance programming with community schools and organizations.

  • EmpowerHer, an initiative designed to support leadership, confidence and mindset development for female dancers.

Productions such as The Nutcracker are an important part of that mission.

Giving Young Dancers the Opportunity to Take the Stage

Dance education happens in the studio—but something remarkable happens when a child gets to take what they have learned and bring it to a stage.

Preparing for The Nutcracker requires months of rehearsals, choreography, costume fittings and teamwork. Young dancers learn that being part of a production means showing up for themselves and for one another.

They develop musicality and technique, but they also practice perseverance, responsibility, attention to detail, courage and collaboration.

Then the curtain rises.

Through Dance Academy VA Productions' Take the Stage initiative, young dancers have the opportunity to experience the sense of accomplishment that comes from contributing to a full-scale production in a professional performance venue.

For many dancers, those are the moments they remember long after the final bow.

See The Nutcracker at Capital One Hall in Tysons

Part of what makes DAV’s Nutcracker so special is the opportunity for young dancers to perform on the main stage at Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia.

For the audience, it means families can experience a full-length Nutcracker production close to home in Northern Virginia.

Located in Tysons, Capital One Hall is convenient for families coming from McLean, Vienna, Falls Church, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax and throughout Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area.

Is The Nutcracker Good for Children?

Yes. The Nutcracker is one of the most popular ballets for introducing children to live dance and classical ballet.

The imaginative story, colorful characters, music, costumes and changing scenes give younger audience members plenty to discover throughout the performance. Children can follow Clara from her family's Christmas celebration into a fantastical world of dancing characters and holiday magic.

For many families, attending The Nutcracker becomes an annual tradition. And for some children sitting in the audience, seeing dancers on stage for the first time is what inspires them to begin dancing themselves.

Your Ticket Supports Something Bigger

When you attend Dance Academy of Virginia’s The Nutcracker, you are doing more than enjoying a holiday performance.

You are supporting a community that believes children deserve opportunities to experience the confidence, discipline, friendship and joy that come from dance.

Through Dance Academy VA Productions, DAV works to expand those opportunities through performances, scholarships and community outreach, helping more young dancers learn, grow and experience the magic of taking the stage.

That makes every performance about more than what happens under the lights.

It is about creating opportunities for the next generation of dancers.
