Dance Academy of Virginia Academy Program 2026–2027: Where Young Dancers Thrive

Updated: Mar 24

For young dancers ready to take their training seriously, the Academy Program at Dance Academy of Virginia offers an immersive, pre-professional experience that goes far beyond basic dance classes. Dance Academy of Virginia is recognized for its classical ballet training in Northern Virginia, and the Academy Program is the perfect place for students ages 7–18 to refine their technique, expand their artistry, and develop the habits that lead to long-term success in dance.

This program isn’t just about learning steps -it’s about shaping dancers who are confident, disciplined, and passionate. With guidance from an experienced professional faculty, students gain more than just physical skills. They build resilience, perseverance, and a strong work ethic, while also learning the importance of teamwork, body positivity, and supporting fellow dancers. For many students, the friendships formed in the studio last a lifetime.

Training Across Styles, Building Versatility

At the heart of the Academy Program is a foundation in classical dance styles including ballet and jazz technique. These technical underpinnings help students master alignment, balance, and musicality - skills that translate into all other dance styles. From there, students expand their versatility with two programs -  the Contemporary Academy focusing on ballet, contemporary, & jazz that then extends into pointe, hip hop, leaps & turns. Tap Academy focuses solely on tap dance with supplemental classes in jazz technique.

By training across multiple styles, dancers develop flexibility, strength, and adaptability. Whether a student dreams of performing professionally or simply wants to push their own limits, this multi-faceted approach ensures they can excel in any performance setting.

Performing at a Professional Level

The Academy Program emphasizes real-world experience through performance. Students participate in a Spring Concert, which is designed as a professional-caliber production.  They also have the opportunity to participate in the Nutcracker that takes place during the winter.

For those seeking additional challenges, competition opportunities are available by audition. These experiences help students refine their technique and gain confidence in their abilities, preparing them for both local and national stages.

Locations and Program Levels

Our Contemporary Academy Program, serving dancers from 1st grade through high school, is primarily based in McLean, where all levels are offered. In Del Ray, Contemporary Academy is available for dancers in 1st through 3rd grade.

For Tap Academy, all levels are offered exclusively at the McLean location.

Families should note that dancers who progress beyond the 3rd grade Contemporary levels in Del Ray will transition to McLean to continue their training. This structure ensures all students have access to the full range of classes, faculty, and opportunities needed to reach their highest potential.

Life Lessons Beyond the Studio

While technical mastery is central, the Academy Program also prioritizes personal growth. Students develop time management, responsibility, and the discipline needed to balance intensive training with school and life. They also learn resilience and perseverance - skills that extend far beyond dance and into everyday life. The program fosters a supportive, inclusive environment where students can challenge themselves while feeling encouraged and valued.
